On February 7, 2018, Conservative MP Peter Kent announced that Conservatives are launching a petition to demand that Prime Minister Trudeau repay over $200,000 his unauthorized vacation to the private island of the Agha Khan cost the Canadian taxpayers.
The Aga Khan is the 49th Hereditary Imam of the world’s 15 million Shia Ismaili Muslims whose Aga Khan Foundation Canada, a registered lobbyist organization, received tens of millions of dollars from the federal government.
After a year-long investigation, the ethics commissioner found that Trudeau violated four major sections of the Conflict of Interest Act, making Trudeau the first sitting Prime Minister in Canadian history to do so. Following the ethic’s commissioner’s findings, Trudeau offered an apology for not clearing his vacation with the commissioner’s office in advance, and promised to do so in the future. He didn’t offer to pay back the $200,000.
“He has refused to offer any meaningful discussion and, more importantly, he has refused to accept any consequences”, Kent said during a press conference in Parliament. “By spending more than $200,000 on an ill-considered, illegal vacation, and refusing to repay those improper expenses, the Prime Minister has shown again his disdain for the rules of the House, his disdain for his own ethical guidelines and his disregard and disrespect for fellow Members of Parliament”.
“Canadian taxpayers deserve to be repaid hundreds of thousands of dollars improperly spent on his illegal vacation”, Kent continued.
He urges Canadians to let Trudeau know that they expect him to pay back the expenses by calling his constituency office in Gatineau, Quebec, by calling or emailing the Prime Minister’s office in Ottawa, or by sending him an empty envelope with the words “Pay it back” written on the back.
