British writer Melanie Phillips will be speaking in Toronto later this month. She is the author ofLondonistan(2006), which drew the world’s attention to the way that Britain had accommodated the Islamist agenda, and The World Turned Upside Down: the Global Battle over God, Truth and Power(2010). The latter book details many of the themes that she writes and speaks about; she is crystal clear in the way she delineates the battle lines in the conflict between traditional and currently popular attitudes towards truth, religion, science, nationalism, the world’s climate, and politics – particularly where Israel is concerned.
Her upcoming visit is in conjunction with her latest book, Guardian Angel: My Journey from Leftism to Sanity(available later this month from Bombardier). Two of Melanie Phillips’s speaking engagements in Toronto will be hosted by the Speakers Action Group, a project of the non-profit Mozuud Freedom Foundation (mozuud.org). She will be speaking at the Holy Blossom Temple on the evening of Sunday, the 18th of February; and at a downtown law firm at 11:30 on Tuesday the 20th. Information and tickets will be available at the Speakers Action website (speakersaction.com).
Melanie Phillips began her career in writing for local newspapers and small magazines while in her 20s. She wrote for The Guardian, a newspaper with a left-wing stance, from 1977 until 1993, when the gap between the paper’s politics and hers seems to have become too great for both parties to tolerate. She has since written for The Observer, The Sunday Times, The Daily Mail, and The Jewish Chronicle. She is currently a columnist for The Timesof London and a frequent panelist on the BBC.
Her new book describes how she was shaken out of her left-wing views through being “mugged by reality,” leading to her estrangement not only from her newspaper, but also from family and friends. Her personal struggles are set in the larger conflicts within society — particularly the one that pits ordinary people against elites, leading to events such as Brexit and the election of Donald Trump.
What the critics say:
“She has…lost her rational and moral compass…often border(s) on the Islamophobic…ignores the dangers of Jewish and Christian fundamentalism. (H)er embrace of global warming denial and intelligent design is tragic.” – The Guardian
“Melanie Phillips has been one of the brave and necessary voices of our time, unafraid to speak the language of moral responsibility in an age of obfuscation and denial. This searing account of her personal journey is compelling testimony to her courage in speaking truth to power.” – Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks
